If you bought a home in 2007, we want to remind you to take advantage of the Homestead Exemption that is available to you. Filing for the Homestead Exemption only has to be done once by you in order for you to benefit from this discount to your property tax bill for as long as you own your home.

However, there are important deadlines and procedures you must follow to complete the process. Below is information on the steps you must take depending on the county where you live.

How to file for Homestead Exemption: The Homestead Exemption is available to legal residents of Georgia for their primary homes. You are able to claim a partial exemption, which can amount to substantial property tax savings. Senior citizens may have additional exemptions available. Check with you county tax office. You are entitled to the Homestead Exemption if you owned and occupied your home by January 1st. The Homestead Exemption filing deadline is March 1st.

What You May Need in Order to File:
A copy of the recorded Warranty Deed
Social Security Numbers of all persons on the deed
The name of the Mortgage holder (lender)
Note: Some counties require a copy of the closing statement (HUD Settlement Statement), driver’s license number and tag number.
