County Description
Located east of Fulton County, DeKalb County is the second largest county in the state with a population near 690,000. If Atlanta is considered an "international city," it is because DeKalb County makes it so with businesses and residences representing over 30 different countries and speaking 120 languages.
DeKalb County prospers in part to its excellent transportation system. Five major road arteries traverse the county: Interstates 20, 85, 285, 675, and US Highway 78. Hartsfield International Airport is only six miles from DeKalb's southern border and the DeKalb Peachtree Airport, a general aviation field, is reported to be the second busiest airport in Georgia. DeKalb County is also a leader in the biomedical community with The Center for Disease Control and the American Cancer Society headquartered here. In recent years, the square has undergone a renaissance as small storefront motifs have been preserved, attracting unique shopping, entertainment and dining that includes By Hand South, Square Roots, Eddie's Attic, Watershed and Super Club. The square also plays host to numerous festivals, town celebrations and neighborhood parties.
Decatur is home to a diverse population, attracting young professionals, families and retirees. With Agnes Scott College, a prestigious women's college, and just outside the city limits, Emory University, Decatur is a college town amidst a big city. Older brick homes, smaller bungalows and cottage homes distinguish the community and the surrounding neighborhoods of Avondale Estates, Oakhurst, and Candler Park.
Dunwoody In the northern corner of the county is Dunwoody, a popular neighborhood among established professionals and young, upwardly mobile professionals raising families.
It is often referred to as the "tennis set" neighborhood because of its numerous recreational outlets that include Lynwood Park and Recreation Center, Blackburn Park and Tennis Center, and the Tennis Center. Cultural attractions include the Dunwoody Nature Park and Nature Center and the Spruill Gallery.
