Smyrna

Known as “the Jonquil City with beautiful parks, thriving business, great location, and bright plans for the future,” the city of Smyrna is a vital part of the Metro Atlanta area.  Only 10 miles northwest of Downtown, Smyrna offers easy access to the city with proximity to three interstates: I-20, I-75, and I-285.  Additionally, Smyrna is served by major roadways such as Cobb Parkway (U.S. 41) and South Cobb Drive (State Hwy 280).

Smyrna is a robust community today and has an equally interesting past.  Settlers began to flow into the area in the 1830s.  Like so many Georgia towns and cities, the growth of the area was affected by the Western and Atlantic Railway.  Initially a frontier village, the railway, and the jobs it brought, turned Smyrna into a growing community.  The name Smyrna was chosen by the city’s Founding Fathers.  It was named after one of the churches established by the Apostle Paul. When the first Civil War shots were fired at Fort Sumpter, Confederate officers and soldiers trained at the Smyrna Camp Ground.  Civil War Battles raged through Smyrna for one week in 1864.  Union soldiers occupied the area briefly before marching on to Atlanta.  While Smyrna is undergoing significant growth and exciting change, it still honors and safeguards its past.  Civil War markers are prevalent throughout the area.

Several years after the war, Samuel Taylor moved to Smyrna from Atlanta.  His son mailed him a burlap sack full of Jonquil bulbs from Washington.  Mr. Taylor shared the bulbs with several nearby friends.  The flowers flourished and continue to come back year after year.  Each spring, Smyrna is painted yellow by the thousands upon thousands of Jonquils that fragrantly bloom along the roadways and in the area’s parks.  But the signature flower is not the only thing that brings Smyrna residents outdoors.  The city offers ample parks, jogging trails, golf courses, and tennis courts. The acclaimed Silver Comet Trail also originates here.

Smyrna’s downtown area has been revitalized in recent years; The Village Green is a walkable, mixed-use town center with a library, community center, fountain, shops, restaurants, and a range of housing options.  The Village Green lends Smyrna that old-time community feel, and has spurred the city’s growth for several years.  The Village Green has been such a successful venture for the city of Smyrna, that the Urban Land Institute, an advocate for better land use, bestowed the city with an award of excellence.
